The Gillette Company, which in addition to shaving products makes Paper Mate, Flair and Waterman pens, agreed today to pay $:285 million ($561 million) for Parker Pen Holdings Ltd. of Britain. The deal will make Gillette, which is the world’s largest shaving supplies company, the world’s largest pen maker, with a 15 percent share of the $5 billion world market. Bic holds about 8 percent; other rivals are Cross, Mont Blanc and Pentel.

Parker, which had been up for sale since last year, was attractive because it had consistent 20 percent operating profits over the last four years, said Alfred M. Zeien, Gillette’s chairman. The company’s sales grew 7 percent to 9 percent annually over the last few years and profits are rising “well in excess of that,” he said. Joel Davis, vice president of Gillette’s stationery division, said Gillette and Parker “complement each other with different geographic strengths, price point positioning and distribution channels.” Gillette’s shares fell 37.5 cents yesterday, to $57. Parker, founded in the United States in 1888, was acquired by investors led by Schroder Ventures in 1986. Parker had sales of $:181 million and profits of $:35.9 million before taxes and interest for the year ended Feb. 28.

The Knabb house in Anchorage sold recently in a foreclosure sale. The FBI should keep Anchorage on their Knabb radar.

Thanks Fraud Hunter!. What is “APU”? Also, do you know approximately when they were in Anchorage? Was it before Jay Knabb went to Jail on June 7 2012? According to the FBI report in the court documents, LV tried to convey the house in Anchorage to a trust, with her Skadi Nordic partner / investor as trustee, and the baby as the beneficiary! This was after Knabb agreed to give the house up to the SEC. Also, do you know anything about a big motor home they had? I heard it was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

APU = Alaska Pacific University (Nordic Skiing Center) LV’s former ski racing sponsor. LV, sister and kid were in Anchorage AFTER Knabb went to jail. Mid July. It was shortly after the foreclosure sale of their Sky Mountain Drive home. Perhaps she was here to personally pick up the 200K check from the Municipality of Anchorage (300+K sale price minus 100+ in taxes). With the check she could cash it or co sign and deposit it into her parent bank account (the FBI/SEC should monitor Mom and Pop’s bank transactions). I heard about the big motor home, a huge Dutch Star or something like that. Don’t know the current status of it. LV is just as devious as JK, IMO. I’d like to think that the FBI or SEC is on her. But they probably aren’t.

Thanks, Fraud Hunter. Very interesting. Others heard that the huge motor home went to East Wenatchee WA and was seen at one of their 2 new houses there. Looking for where it went and if sold, where the money went. The judge says $11 million still unaccounted for! If you hear of any more info, please post. Thanks!

The theft of “his” (Jasper Knabb) items filed in a sheriff’s report in WA state indicated expensive EMT medical kits valued at close to $22,000 in addition to the gold pens. These kit’s are the types that one would find in jets and yachts expensive toys like Knabb purchased with ill gotten gains. These “stolen” items were reported and then turned into his wife’s insurance company just the next month, after he pleaded guilty in July of 2011 and ever since he maintains has no assets to repay victims of his scams. Either way, he is caught in another lie. The Fed’s need to look harder as Judge White instructed them to do so. Previously, Knabb was arrested for insurance fraud in Myrtle Beach.

“Federal investigators also questioned the indirect transfer of an Alaska based trust from Knabb’s ex wife, a fellow defendant in the SEC case, to [Laura} Valaas. The trust held Knabb’s former home in Anchorage, which was encumbered by $98,000 in liens and property taxes. In March, Valaas asked

the current trustee to step down and replaced him with her Skadi Nordic business partner, with a secondary trust named as beneficiary. Likely the feds feel they can show they jailed a fraudster, so case closed and on to bigger fish instead of chasing after a well hidden measly 11 million. Too bad, because LV needs to be held accountable for her part in this scam.

Hard to know if the FEDS are investigating LV. The judge who sentenced Knabb said that LV’s testimony was not believable, and might be perjury. There are victims around the country keeping an eye on things to see where the $11M is. One of the yachts was conveyed to a company owned by Knabb’s former wife Tammy. Then it sold to a 3rd party. The FEDS should see where those millions went too. Also, does anyone know what type of fancy motorhome Knabb bought, from where, and what happened to it? Folks saw it in their 1st E. Wenatchee home for a time. Then, there were many things sold using LV’s name, Pipefreeze, Reallyalaska, etc. The SEC has a judgment against Knabb and if they do their jobs, they will find assets for the victims, and punish those who helped to hide those assets.

PB I hope you are right about the SEC pursuing assets for wronged investors. But too often it seems that feds are out to justify their jobs, more than to do their jobs. High profile catches and incarcerations like with Knabb help them justify their jobs. Finding a hidden million here or there doesn’t have the sensationalism of a catch and 21 year sentence. I think the Knabb Valaas chapter is over as far as the feds are concerned and the SEC/FBI fraud unit is likely after the next big headline project that will justify their jobs. I hope that this is not the case . but me thinks it is.

LV is a honest and good person who I have been friends with for years. Like many young woman, I think she fell in love with a guy that ended up causing her a lot of headaches. Jay obviously got himself in a lot of trouble and wasn’t the best match, but he was nice to her.

I don’t think we need an FBI investigation about the foolishness of young love. I don’t know anything about her personal finances beyond what is reported online, but I do trust her because she has always been there for me and I know she is not out to get rich or cheat others.

Cammie, The real issue is the investors that Knabb bilked and the peoples’ lives that he ruined because of his fraudulent stock scams. The point of an FBI/SEC investigation is to recover as much money as possible from this crime, and return it to the victims. If LV is “honest and good” as you say,
montblank AKA Valaas gets 21 years Federal Prison for massive fraud
then she has nothing to worry about. But if she is helping Knabb hide money or assets this is a losing battle that will eventually ruin her life. If such is the case she should come clean now or she too will be in prison. If she is a good friend of yours you should impress this fact on her. “Love” may have set her up for a lifetime of problems, or prison time.

Cammie: I respect your loyalty to your friend, LV. I equally respect the fact that Jay Knabb caused untold life changing pain to thousands of his victims for 20 years preceding his Pegasus scam. I agree with Fraud Hunter; if all those mens watches and $40,000 mens Watch Winders were really LV’s and sold for LV, then victims are not due that money. If, however, those items and others were really Knabb’s then that would be a real problem and law enforcement might take notice. Also, I cannot imagine why LV would stick by Jay Knabb while he was posting on singles websites to date other women, while his wife was at home with their baby! Look at this posting Jay Knabb made in January 2012!

Cammie: While it is certainly possible that one might chalk up LV’s actions to the “foolishness of young love”, nevertheless, at some point she should have been more candid as it pertains to their finances. After all, to most observers, the lavish lifestyle and spending was financed literally on the backs of Knabb’s many victims who lost their life’s savings. When LV stated that all those men’s watches, guitars, custom pool cues, etc. sold on ebay and elsewhere were really her’s, that is not believable. Everyone who knows Knabb knows that he owned an expensive rare guitar collection, HO train collection, custom pool cues, and men’s watches. Not to mention expensive motorhome, cars, etc. When LV liquidated those items for Knabb, that literally was not her or Knabb’s money.

Even at the sentencing, the Judge said of LV’s testimony ” I DISREGARDED MOST OF HER TESTIMONY AND FIND TO BE INCREDIBLE BORDERING ON PERJURY” .

Also, the FBI reported that LV was actively involved in trying to convey Knabb’s Alaska mansion to a trust with their infant son as the sole beneficiary. These are not acts of a young innocent.

The judge asked the FBI and Federal Prosecutors to investigate “others” of potential conspiracy to obstruct justice by helping Knabb to hide assets. Nobody knows if the FBI is actively investigating Laura. However, if they are following the judge’s suggestion, then , in my opinion, it would be better that she aid them to follow the money trail.

In LV’s “plead for leniency” letter to the judge she stated that she knew of Knabb’s problems with the SEC BEFORE she married him. If she knew that Knabb cheated investors out of millions and she is an intelligent woman, which she certainly is, then she could easily make the deduction that Knabb’s opulent assets were the spoils of fraudulent transactions. But instead of showing integrity and walking away AFTER she marries Knabb she allows herself and her business, Skadi Nordic, to be showered with his ill gotten millions and she helps him liquidate assets via ebay when prison time looms. OK, let’s not beat around the bush here. LV is guilty of abetting a criminal that got 21 years. LV needs to do prison time too. Maybe 2 3 years. I hope the FBI/SEC gets off their duffs and brings LV to justice.

Skadi Nordic was claimed to be owned by Laura Valaas alone in public domain Federal Court documents: not Knabb. However, it seems to be completely silent online since Jasper Knabb went to jail on 6/7/12. I wonder if Knabb was the one who funded Skadi. Also, Knabb was hawking his toy trains online, and now Laura is doing Lulu’s trains. Transcripts from Knabb’s sentencing on June 7, 2012 will be made public on Oct. 18, 2012.

Also, does anyone have any information about Knabb’s police report of a theft at his first E. Wenatchee home last summer? Jay Knabb had been previously arrested in South Carolina for a similar (false) theft report. Supposedly, he had no money, yet the police report showed that he owned about $30,000 in Mont Blanc pens!

Potential Insurance Fraud? Jay Knabb? What do you think?

Of course Knabb was the money behind Skadi Nordic. Prior to Skadi Nordic’s existence LV was living in a tiny apt in west Anchorage and had a Paypal donation link on her personal web page to panhandle to support her ski racing habit. She had little money. And definitely no money to buy expensive fabrication machinery and fund a business start up. Like you said, the proof that Skadi Nordic was yet another outlet for Knabb spending money stolen from others is the fact that SN went silent when Knabb went to prison. Not even a “sorry we’re out of business” notice on the SN web site to former customers. Ritabrata Banerjee, a Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP, has landed in a controversy after being photographed with a Mont Blanc pen and an Apple smartwatch during a football match in West Bengal that raised questions about his lifestyle all started after Sumit Talukdar, who reportedly works for a start up posted photographs of Banerjee on social media pointing at the pen jutting out of the MP pocket and his watch during the East Bengal Mohun Bagan Derby faceoff in Siliguri on January 12.

Talukdar questioned the source of his luxury pen and watch symbols of an ostentatious lifestyle that the party members are supposed to refrain from. He asked how could a CPI(M) parliamentarian, who gets a monthly wage of Rs 6000 from the party, afford the expensive items that cost around Rs 80,000. The post even mentioned the model of the Mont Blanc pen.

He, however, did not deny sending the mail in which he talked of filing a complaint against Talukdar with the Delhi Police, a threat he subsequently withdrew apparently under pressure from CPI(M) central leaders, including party general secretary Sitaram Yechury.

Talukdar, who has at least one Facebook profile and three Twitter accounts,

did not respond to the messages sent by HT.

While both Banerjee and Talukdar deleted the controversial posts, it was how the episode unfolded on social media that has raised eyebrows and questions. And as the left party is all set to pull up its youngest Rajya Sabha MP for threatening Talukdar, the cyber war has also exposed the differences between established hierarchy and emerging ranks.

will not comment on this, Banerjee told HT when asked whether the CPI(M) has asked for his explanation.

However, he reportedly told his associates that he was a victim of a conspiracy.

Senior CPI M leaders HT talked to made it apparent that Banerjee had earned the wrath of the young and even some old party members because of his lifestyle a sensitive issue for a party that is trying to shed bourgeois vices through reforms.

Some even claimed that Banerjee no longer enjoys the support of former Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who is known to have strongly backed his nomination to the Upper House.

However, the email that Banerjee sent to Talukdar employer from his iPhone came into the possession of a man, who identifies himself as Subrata Mondal on Facebook and has several CPI M members on his friend list.

Mondal posted a screenshot of Banerjee email on his Facebook page but masked Talukdar name and the company he reportedly works for. Mondal timeline carried the screenshot of Banerjee email till Monday night along with his comments.

Communist party whole timer supposedly depositing his monthly salary to the party account, as per the CPI M constitution, and getting a monthly wage of around Rs 6000 from the Party is known for his extravagant and upscale lifestyle, something that on lookers say only millionaires can afford, Mondal wrote.

cheerleaders of the MP argued that it is not compulsory for a communist to lead a modest lifestyle. But the bigger and only question was what exactly has been the source of his funds? Mondal added in the post in which a few CPI(M) members from Bengal were also tagged.

sell mont blanc pens 6 Tiny Mistakes That Caused Apocalyptic Explosions

tour de mt blanc 6 Tiny Mistakes That Caused Apocalyptic Explosions

It was an easy job, too, because space had already been dug for a separate set of lines (for gasoline), so it was as simple as laying his water lines in the same trench. There’s no way that can start an apocalyptic wave of destruction across the entire city, right?

Surely if it could, the Joker would have thought of it already.

Fast forward a few years. On April 19, 1992, residents of the city noticed that their water smelled like gas. Local officials heard one complaint after another about smelly toilets and drains, and then someone noticed gas vapors coming out of the manholes.

Within two days, those vapors morphed into full on smoke columns. And since the Guadalajarans weren’t living in the “Thriller” video, this was a pretty alarming development. What if Ninja Turtles were real and they were in danger underground? Or worse, what if Ninja Turtles weren’t real, and something else was going on?”No, all I see is darkness and shit. Does that mean I’m a goth?”

Well, that gassy smell in the water? Turns out that was gas. Highly combustible natural gas. The city’s water was so explosive that something as small as a lit cigarette or a particularly hard finger snap could ignite it. And remember, these pipes were running under the town, so it’s like everybody was suddenly living on top of a gigantic landmine. And before anyone could figure out how the gas got there or what to do about it, the first explosion hit.

Via H2Oreuse

It was the one time in history that “my toilet smells like shit” actually meant something important.

We say “the first” because 10 more followed.

Each blast erupted under the busy streets of the downtown district. And we’re not talking about little pops, either. One actually sent a bus flying. In fact, some of the blasts registered as high as 7.1 on the Richter scale recorded in Mexico City, hundreds of miles away. When all was said and done, 6 miles of sewer lines were destroyed and the city looked like post blitzkrieg London.

Via H2Oreuse

We’ve never seen a semi truck writhing in agony before.

Eventually, investigators discovered that the whole shebang came back to that anonymous contractor who placed the city’s water pipe over the state owned gas company’s pipe. It turns out that the water pipes were made of zinc coated iron, and the gas pipes were made of steel. Put them together and you get a reaction that leads to corrosion. Take a peek inside anybody’s garage or basement or, hell, their refrigerator, and you’ll see a large collection of unwanted stuff to be dealt with at some unspecified point in the future.

So what happens when your company makes rocket fuel and finds itself with way, way too much of it? It gets stacked in containers and crammed out of the way. And then, eventually, this happens:

Note the distinct lack of rocket at the other end of those plumes.

The company in this case was PEPCON, whose job was producing a particular compound that was pretty much used exclusively as space shuttle fuel. But by 1988, the space shuttle program had been frozen for over two years, thanks to the Challenger disaster. The product this company was producing was temporarily obsolete, like Jason Bateman between the years 1991 and 2003. By all rights PEPCON should have stopped and just made guest appearances on The Love Boat and Hollywood Squares for a while.

Via W. Oelen

“Well, OK, but don’t let it sit next to Charles Nelson Reilly. You’re just asking for trouble.”

Instead, for two years PEPCON kept making this fuel that no one needed. Piles and piles of the stuff. And then, because no one was buying it, they ran out of places to put it. They were like the hoarders of the chemical company world, but instead of dead cats and used diapers piled to the ceiling, they had 4,000 tons of amazingly combustible rocket fuel, which they eventually stored in plastic bins.

Now, we’re not rocket scientists, but if we were, we’d probably know that these particular plastic bins were oil based, and that this particular rocket fuel compound was an oxidizer. And that one welding spark could set off a pretty big explosion. Here’s video of what that looked like:

We’ve all been there. Some jackhole is late getting you a report, or updating a spreadsheet, or approving your lap band surgery. So you’re the one who gets yelled at by the boss or has to sit through another MTV Spring Break with your shirt on. In either case, someone else’s error put you in a bind. But no matter how bad your situation was, you’ve got nothing on the victims of the Halifax explosion.”On the upside, we still have a bitterly cold winter to look forward to.”

On December 6, 1917, a Norwegian ship called the SS Imo arrived in the Halifax Harbor in Nova Scotia, Canada. The ship was there for a simple mission: get some relief supplies for war victims in Belgium, turn around, go home. The problem was that their coal, aka ship juice, was late. For two days the ship sat in the harbor, waiting. Late deliveries happen every day, though. Hell, we bet this very article is making someone somewhere late for something.

The actual disaster was a little more complicated, but not by much. When the SS Imo finally got refueled, the harbor was logjammed with typical wartime traffic and the Imo wasn’t piloted by the most patient of captains. On one side of the narrow channel conveniently called “The Narrows” was the Imo, which picked up speed to pass dawdling ships. In the oncoming “lane” was the Mont Blanc, a ship loaded with explosives on its way to France. And even though the Mont Blanc had the right of way, there was nowhere for the Imo to go the space was too narrow. As a last ditch attempt to avoid the collision, the Mont Blanc made a hard left and the Imo reversed its engines. If only one ship had made a move, things might have worked out alright. Unfortunately, it didn’t.

Liberty has also brought ex Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn back to F1.

The former Ferrari technical director, who had been acting as a consultant to Liberty, has been appointed to lead the sporting and technical side of F1.

Ecclestone said earlier on Monday he had been “forced out”.

He told Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport: “I was dismissed. This is official. I no longer run the company. My position has been taken by Chase Carey.”

Why F1’s titanic leader was loved and loathedEcclestone, who added he did not know what his new job title meant, declined to comment when approached by BBC Sport, who revealed on Sunday he would leave his job this week.

Liberty began its takeover of the sport in September and earlier in January cleared the last two regulatory hurdles.

The deal was completed on Monday and Liberty Media is to be renamed the Formula 1 Group following the takeover.

As well as Brawn’s return, former ESPN executive Sean Bratches has been hired to run the commercial side of the sport.

Brawn, 62, masterminded all seven of Michael Schumacher’s world titles at Benetton and Ferrari and also won the championship with Jenson Button with his own team in 2009. He then moved to Mercedes, where he laid the foundations for Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg’s title wins.

Both he and Bratches will report to Carey, a former long time lieutenant of media mogul Rupert Murdoch and chairman of his 21st Century Fox company.

“I’m very pleased that the business has been acquired by Liberty and that it intends to invest in the future of F1. I am sure that Chase will execute his role in a way that will benefit the sport.”

Chase Carey: “I am excited to be taking on the additional role of CEO. F1 has huge potential with multiple untapped opportunities. I have enjoyed hearing from the fans, teams, [governing body] FIA, promoters and sponsors on their ideas and hopes for the sport.

“I would like to recognise and thank Bernie for his leadership over the decades. The sport is what it is today because of him and the talented team of executives he has led, and he will always be part of the F1 family.

“Bernie’s role as chairman emeritus befits his tremendous contribution to the sport and I am grateful for his continued insight and guidance as we build F1 for long term success and the enjoyment of all those involved.”

Greg Maffei, president and CEO of Liberty Media Corporation: “We are delighted to have completed the acquisition of F1 and that Chase will lead this business as CEO. I’d like to thank Bernie Ecclestone for his tremendous success in building this remarkable global sport.”

Zak Brown, executive director, McLaren Technology Group: “Formula 1 wouldn’t be the international sporting powerhouse that it is today without the truly enormous contribution made over the past half century by Bernie Ecclestone. Indeed, I can’t think of a single other person who has had anything like as much influence on building a global sport as he has.

the smarmy US educated Nepali programme staffer at international aids organisation IDAF, and the engaging Rama Bhauji, the single mother and member of the village women committee uncomfortable with the accounting that comes with the funding. They represent the two ends of the aid spectrum in Nepal; a world of SUVs, Mont Blanc pens and sunny offices juxtaposed against the tough reality of everyday living in the villages that is brought to life by Thapa deft writing. The IDAF, she says, is “hermetically sealed, as though to keep Nepal out”, the staff neatly divided between the locals and the foreigners. It appears to be a perversely structured world of “deliverables, quantifiables, measurements and matrixes” and the IDAF itself is described by Tomas, another expatriate in Nepal, as a “collusion between international and national elite”. When he tries to persuade Ava to move from Nepal to Myanmar and she demurs, citing the size of the annual budget for her IDAF programme, he says impatiently, “Fuck the aid industry, all it does is enrich the global elite”.It an insider look at the moneyed world of donors, lenders and receivers. The cynicism of life in Kathmandu contrasts nicely with Thapa descriptives of village life.Issues like human trafficking are also slipped in without making too much of a big deal. In a conversation with Gyanu, Ava expresses concern over young girls going to India for work and discusses the high risk of trafficking in the area as well as the fact that more than 10,000 Nepali girls are trafficked annually.Notwithstanding the machinations and cut and thrust of the world of NGOs and careerist activists, All Of Us ends with Sapana and a programme that works,

Wisdom can be found in the most unexpected places. Today, wisdom bubbled up from a pineapple under the sea. I suddenly realized that everything you want to know about writing articles for your website can be taught by SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends.

When you write for your newsletter, blog, or website, which character are you most like?

Squidward: Squidward is B O R I N G. When writing articles, are you a Squidward? Do you just get the words down on paper or are you finding a fun twist to entertain your audience and keep them coming back for more? Take time to make your articles stand out from the thousands of other dull articles out there by including personal stories or just having fun while writing. For instance, this article could be entitled to Write a Good Article but would it stand out from the hundreds of other articles about article writing? Probably not.

Mr. Krabs: This crustacean is focused on one thing and one thing only, making more and more and more money. Only a cartoon could actually have dollar signs drawn in his eyes. He thinks of no one, only how he can benefit. Are your articles focused on you or on the reader? Are you providing information or do you have blinders on, thinking only about how you can make money from the article you are writing? If your article reads like an ad or is self serving or full of affiliate links, you might write like Mr. Krabs.

Patrick: SpongeBob best friend, the starfish, has a good heart, but isn the brightest creature in the sea. Do your articles make you sound like an expert? Are you providing valuable content or just pushing out sloppy articles as fast as you can? Always double check for typos and grammatical errors. Or slow down, set your article aside for a day and then reread it before you click the button.

Plankton: The smallest creature in the sea is also the sneakiest. He do anything and hurt anyone to steal someone else work (the Krabby Pattie secret formula). Write your own material. Don be Plankton. Don copy and paste someone else work, edit it, and try to pass it off as your own. You will be caught,

and it just isn worth it. Take the same amount of effort and work on your own thoughts and ideas. Plankton never gets away with his schemes, either. He on Plan and is still pathetically failing at his attempts to steal the secret formula.

SpongeBob: This little guy always tries to do the right thing, and is a hard worker. He may not always end up getting the results he hoped for, but he bounces back and tackles his work with a renewed vigor. SpongeBob works very hard, he a good friend, he always thinks of others, and tries to have fun no matter what he is faced with. Hardworking, friendly SpongeBob is the guy to be when writing articles.

Although this is a silly lesson in article writing, I hope you remember the important messages our underwater friends have taught us.

1. Be entertaining. Not boring.

2. Write articles to help others, not with dollar signs in your eyes.

3. Proofread your articles carefully, and provide valuable information.

4. Write your own material. Don copy others.

5. Be a SpongeBob! Hard work and persistence pay off.

Before you know it, you develop a following for having informative and entertaining articles and you be King or Queen of the sea.

The Ministry of Agriculture has been selling off Crown lands regularly each year for decades, but this time it trying something new an online auction.

vacant Crown lands has always been a part of our business (An online action) is new for us, but I think that just where the sale of land has gone, said Wally Hoehn, executive director for land branch with the Ministry of Agriculture.

Starting Wednesday, the ministry put about 80 parcels of land on the auction block on Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers website. The parcels are divided into different districts, with staggered closing dates.

The ministry ran a pilot project in 2016 to give the format a try. that time, we wanted to test the platform, the online platform, and then just to see whether this would be a publicly accepted method of selling Crown land, Hoehn said.

The pilot project was smaller, including only eight parcels of land, and tested both a live and online auction format.

had very positive feedback from (people). And then the feedback afterwards from the online sales was very positive as well, being it very transparent and just the modern way to approach selling land, Hoehn said.

The land for sale has all been ecologically accessed, with 10 parcels rated at moderate ecological value. This land will be sold with conservation easements on it, and seven per cent of the sale will go into the province Fish and Wildlife Development Fund.

However, Trevor Herriot, co chair of the Public Pasture Public Interest group is concerned with the ecological value of the land.

opposed to the government selling any Crown lands right now. I think that all of our Crown land has ecological value; all farm land has ecological value, Herriot said.

The land for the auction has become vacant over the last year due to clients ending leases and the government cancelling leases.

we just had land vacant and then a client will identify that he interested in acquiring it, some kind of disposition on it. We put those through the review. If they eligible for sale we put them up for sale, Hoehn said.

None of the land up for auction was ever PFRA pastures according to Hoehn.

All of the land for sale is subject to the Farm Land Security Act meaning only Canadians can buy it. The ministry also has the right to reject any bids they see fit.

Richie Bros. was chosen through a formal request for proposal process (RFP) after the pilot project was completed last fall.

public RFP (was held) to identify who had the capabilities, who had experience that kind of thing. So we had multiple respondents to that and that why we decided to go with the professional, Hoehn said.

His memorial service, held in a Greek Orthodox Cathedral in London on the day that Ayatollah Khomeini handed a death sentence to Chatwin’s friend Salman Rushdie, was a legendary event, mobbed by fans, celebrities and hundreds of journalists. Chatwin was by then a cult admired as much for his self mythologizing persona and the values of independent scholarship and lonely questing that he seemed to represent as for his clipped, lapidary prose. With Chatwin, everything had to be the best: the writing, the conversation, the trip, the clothes, the Mont Blanc pens, the Aspreys ink, the notebooks that were only available from certain little Paris papeterie.

Since then those Moleskine notebooks have become a global brand, while Chatwin’s reputation has dwindled.

One of Chatwin’s best books, “On the Black Hill” (Penguin: $16), has now been reissued with a gorgeous jacket by tattoo artist Daniel Obrigo. It tells the story of twin boys, Lewis and Benjamin Taylor, who spend their entire lives on a small farm in the Black Mountains, a rural hinterland that straddles the border between England and Wales. The novel begins in the late 1800s and skips brightly through decades, while Lewis and Benjamin do the same job, sleep in the same bed, see the same land. World events, and advancing technology, inevitably impinge, but this is really a story about the mystery of time: how it changes people and how it doesn’t. Here Chatwin describes the moment preceding the twins’ birth:

“On the 8th of August the weather broke. Stacks of smoky, silver lidded clouds piled behind the hill. At six in the evening, Amos and Dai Morgan were scything the last of the oats. All the birds were silent in the stillness that precedes a storm. Thistledown floated upwards, and a shriek tore out across the valley. The labour pains had begun.”

This passage is typical. Chatwin slows down time, evoking the indelible atmosphere of a moment, before dancing forward again. Entire chapters of “On the Black Hill” are sometimes devoted to a single day, while years hurtle by in the sub clause of a sentence. The effect is mesmerizing. At the still center of the book are Lewis and Benjamin, who literally share sensations. Their earliest memories are identical, and sometimes they dream the same dream. The relationship is telepathic, almost incestuous, and Benjamin, while apparently the less powerful of the two, manages to prevent Lewis from ever marrying. Lewis keeps a scrapbook of airplane disasters; Benjamin shrewdly acquires neighboring properties. Wars wash over them without disturbing their solitude: “Now and then, the drone of an enemy bomber, or some niggling wartime restriction, reminded them of the fighting beyond the Malvern Hills. But the Battle of Britain was too big for Lewis’s scrapbook.”

Eventually the brothers cease talking to each other, symbiosis creating its own form of loneliness; but even death can’t part them, and the novel ends with Benjamin roosting on Lewis’ grave, staring at his own reflection in “a block of shiny black granite, one half with an inscription, the other left blank.”

Chatwin went into the remoter reaches of South America and the wilds of the Australian outback, real journeys that he transformed into explorations of his intellect and related in “In Patagonia” and “The Songlines.” Here, in “On the Black Hill,” he found the wonderful much closer to home. This novel is very much based, like all of Chatwin’s work, on research he did, places he went, people he met. Lawrence, Flaubert, Hemingway, Mandelstam. He aimed high and hit the target often enough. Later he joined the Irish Republican Army, running guns and fighting against the British offences for which he was arrested, sentenced, and swiftly executed in the Irish Civil War of 1922.

His was a life of tragic gallantry and compromised loyalties, issues very much at the heart of his sole novel, “The Riddle of the Sands” (Penguin: $16), first published in 1903 and this month reissued, enshrined indeed, with the shiny black spine of a Penguin Classic. The story features two young Englishmen who, while sailing among the treacherous waters and shifting sands of the Frisian Islands, stumble across secret German plans to invade England.
