If you are new to climbing but want to get started then the best way is to find a nice easy peak where you can get used to the changing temperatures and the stamina needed to be a mountain climber. Be warned! I am not saying just anyone can do these peaks, you still need to train before any climb, but these are by far the easiest peaks to get you started.

Mount Fuji Japan

This is quite spectacular to look at, one of the only mountains in the world that is a singular peak standing at over 12,388 ft. You will need a guide to take you but a novice can easily climb up and down in around 8 hours. Mount Fuji is open just 2 months of the year so make sure you book in advance for July and August. Probably one of the easiest mountains to climb and a great start if you are just getting into trekking.

Mont Blanc France/Italy border

Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the alps standing at 15,780 ft. There are numerous routes you can ascend this peak on both the French and Italian side each with their own challenges. There are plenty of easier routes that a beginner can take and is an excellent way to build up the stamina needed for more of the bigger peaks to come. This will take around 2 days to complete with huts up and down the mountain for an overnight sleep before ascending to the summit.

Mount Elbrus Russia

The highest mountain in Europe stands at 18,510 feet but the climb itself starts at around 12,000 ft so in essence you are only climbing the upper third. Summer is the best time to climb this mountain as unpredictable weather during the winter months could make it impossible. It takes around 2 days to complete the climb so this is ideal for a beginner looking to get used to changing temperatures during a climb.

Jbel Toubkal Morocco

This is one of the easiest mountains to climb in the world, standing at 13,671 ft it will take just 2 days to get to the top on a lovely sunny day. The peak is accessible all year round but the summer months offer the least change of adverse weather conditions. What you get with this climb is outstanding scenery along the way and an amazing view at the peak.

Mount Kinabalu Malaysia

Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in South East Asia at 13,455 ft. It is a great climb for the novice that is used to the changing temperatures and stamina needed for a mountain ascent. It takes 2 days from the base camp to the peak with the use of guides. There are a number of routes that will test the more advanced climber but most will take the route to Low peak to see the morning sunrise. It also offers one of the most amazing views around with the tropical climate at sunrise ideal to see far and wide.

There was a time when the choice of ski accommodation was, to be honest, pretty poor ranging from dingy apartments in monstrous 60s style blocks to chalets with appallingly twee interiors clad in pine and plastic. But that was a long time ago. Nowadays, of course, pretty much wherever you turn, there a range of great and quite seriously high end rental accommodation for those of us who are looking to push the boat out on our ski holidays. Here a run down of some of the most glamorous luxury ski chalets and holiday homes in Europe.

The Eagle Nest; St Anton am Arlberg

The Eagle Nest is what any self respecting, luxe loving skier on their ski holiday in Austria would be looking for. A combination of (largely) traditional exteriors and (largely) modern interiors courtesy of local architect Karl Fahrner the whole thing comes together to striking effect. It far from just an empty aesthetic statement, though: there also some nifty fixtures and fittings such as the external Jacuzzi (carved into the bare rock) to take into account. Throw in a top class location with wonderful views across St Anton and you can see why it claims the price tag it does!

Chalet La Moraine; Chamonix

Chamonix: playground of the well to do winter sports fan. So it hardly surprising that there should be a wide array of seriously enticing luxury ski chalets and holiday homes. And Chalet La Moraine certainly falls into that category. From the outside, it the very definition of a French ski chalet with its sloping, snow covered roof and large balcony out front. Best of all, is the view: staring out at the snow capped Mont Blanc in all its soaring majesty. Cheap it isn but with assets like that who quibbling?

Arabella, Val d Over in Val d the range of fantastic holiday homes for a luxury ski holiday in France is hardly any less extensive. Arabella is a case in point: a handsome detached chalet, built in the traditional style, it an undeniably pretty spectacle. But Arabella also has a real ace up its sleeve: a ski in/ski out location. Which means you can get up, and after a quick breakfast of coffee and croissants, be on the gentle slope leading to the lifts of Solaise and Bellevarde. Perfect.

Trump defends tax plan, proclaims economy set rock (AP) Closing in on the first major legislative achievement of his term, President Donald Trump on Saturday defended the Republican tax cut as a good deal for the middle class while boldly suggesting it could lead to explosive economic growth.

The legislation, which the GOP aims to muscle through Congress next week, would lower taxes on the richest Americans. Benefits for most other taxpayers would be smaller, but Trump attempted to sell the bill as a present for middle class Americans in part because it would trigger job growth.

be fantastic for the middle income people and for jobs, most of all, Trump told reporters on the White House lawn before travelling to Camp David for the weekend. I will say that because of what we done with regulation and other things our economy is doing fantastically well, but it has another big step to go and it can take that step unless we do the tax bill. stranger to hyperbole, Trump also predicted the legislation would cause the economy to soar beyond its current 3 per cent rate of growth.

think we could go to 4, 5 or even 6 per cent, ultimately, the president said. are back. We are really going to start to rock. GOP, tax bill most visible win may be averting failure

WASHINGTON (AP) Despite the sheer size and society spanning impact of the $1.5 trillion tax overhaul, the quickest and most potent political victory that Republicans would savour by pushing the bill through Congress next week may be what it averts: another big GOP legislative crash in the age of Trump.

Even if Republicans are correct that tax cuts for business and the wealthy bolster the economy, it can take time for obvious results to show. And even with millions of families likely to enjoy lower taxes, many won feel much until they file their 2018 tax returns in early 2019. That well after the November 2018 elections that may be a coin flip for control of Congress, and recent races suggest those contests may be heavily influenced by President Donald Trump unpopularity.

Approval of the tax bill seems certain, with House passage assured and two of the few potential Senate GOP opponents lining up Friday behind the measure: Marco Rubio of Florida and Tennessee Bob Corker. That means a White House signing ceremony, probably by Christmas.

Republicans hope that would overshadow their embarrassing failure to repeal President Barack Obama health law. Another flop would have infuriated GOP backers and donors already enraged by the Affordable Care Act debacle, fueling hard right primary challenges against Republican incumbents or encouraging conservatives to stay home in November.

If the tax bill isn approved, country reaction is going to be, did we put you in in the first place?’ said David Winston, a GOP pollster who advises congressional leaders.

Special counsel obtains thousands of Trump transition emails

WASHINGTON (AP) Special counsel Robert Mueller investigation into Russian contacts with President Donald Trump campaign has gained access to thousands of emails sent and received by Trump officials before the start of his administration, according to several people familiar with Trump transition organization.

But the investigators did not directly request the records from Trump still existing transition group, Trump for America, and instead obtained them from a separate federal agency that stored the material, according to those familiar with the Trump transition organization.

A transition attorney sent letters Saturday to two congressional committees saying the General Services Administration had improperly provided the transition records to Mueller investigators. Kory Langhofer, general counsel for the transition group, wrote to the Republican chairmen of the House Oversight committee and the Senate Homeland Security committee about what the transition contends was an disclosure of its emails.

The GSA has provided office space and other aid to presidential transitions in recent years and typically houses electronic transition records in its computer system. But Trump for America considers the records private and privileged and not government property.

The people familiar with the transition organization spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the records sensitivity. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The seven words and phrases transgender, and were not to be used in documents that are to be circulated within the federal government and Congress in preparation of the next presidential budget proposal, the paper reported.

On Saturday a CDC official confirmed CDC officials were given from higher ranks of the federal government at a recent meeting to reconsider certain language in draft budget documents. But she said she did not know if there was any specific prohibition about using those seven words. Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees CDC, said in a statement that it a mischaracterization to say the CDC was banned from using certain words. But HHS officials did not clarify or answer any other questions.

In an email to the agency employees on Saturday night, CDC Director Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald noted the media report and wrote; want to assure you that CDC remains committed to our public health mission as a science and evidence based institution. As part of our commitment to provide for the common defence of the country against health threats, science is and will remain the foundation of our work. Senate, despite GOP efforts to paint Democrat Doug Jones as an unacceptable extremist on the issue.

Certainly, any analysis of what Jones upset over Roy Moore means for other races involves a caveat: The Republican nominee was twice ousted from the state Supreme Court and stood accused of sexual misconduct with minors, baggage that gave Jones an opening in a state that hadn elected a Democratic senator since 1992.

Yet Jones could not have won without crossover votes from conservative Republicans who oppose abortion, and that just what he did.

Exit polls show Jones won a third of voters who said abortion should be illegal in most cases, and 27 per cent of those who want it outlawed completely.

These numbers suggest that abortion may not necessarily be a defining issue in the 2018 midterm elections.

Residents flee as flames approach wealthy California enclave

MONTECITO, Calif. (AP) Residents piled into cars and fled on Saturday, turning downtown Santa Barbara into ghost town as surging winds drove one of the biggest fires in California history toward the city and the nearby wealthy enclave of Montecito.

The mandatory evacuations around Montecito and neighbouring Summerland came as winds that had eased a day earlier roared back at around 30 mph (48 kph), with gusts to about 60 mph (97 kph). Firefighters sprayed water onto hot spots sparked by wind blown embers. Firefighters also drove to the historic San Ysidro Ranch in yellow fire trucks as heavy smoke rose from the coastal hills, blotting out the blue skies.

A portion of Santa Barbara was under mandatory evacuation. At the city zoo, workers began putting some animals into crates and kennels, to ready them for possible evacuation.

Of course, said mission turned into the most terrifying disaster movie this side of the SS Poseidon. In the early morning of May 26, 2013, Okene had just gotten up and was in the bathroom. Suddenly, his ship was hit by what a spokesman later called a “sudden ocean swell” (which is presumably corporate speak for “Shit, we accidentally summoned Cthulhu again”).

Okene could only watch helplessly as his daily life turned into a trip to Rapture. The tugboat capsized and plummeted 100 feet below the surface, with him still inside. Trapped in the dark abyss with no one else in sight and wearing nothing but his boxers, Okene waded through the ship’s corridors (which were slowly filling with icy water). To make things worse, sharks and barracudas soon started roaming the ship’s interiors in search of a meal. He could hear them fighting for the remains of his shipmates in other rooms and swimming in the water just below him. He had no food. The salt water and the bumps from the accident were wearing his skin raw. There was far too little air for him to breathe, and he was ruining it with every breath by puffing out carbon dioxide. He would not last beyond a couple of hours.

Except that he totally did. In fact, he managed to stay alive for 62 hours. Here’s how:

That little beauty is called Boyle’s law. It states that when you increase atmospheric pressure (say, by sinking 100 feet underwater), gases become denser. This meant the tiny air pocket actually contained a lot more oxygen than it would on land. Meanwhile, that lethally cold water aided Okene by absorbing the murderous carbon dioxide he was breathing out, so the CO2 levels never built up to toxic levels, either.

In 2006, the 19 year old Missouri native was in his grandmother’s trailer home when the weather became rowdy. In an attempt to shield himself from the storm, Suter was just standing on the sofa and attempting to close the living room window. Suddenly, things got 10 kinds of crazy. The noise became unbearable. The floor of the trailer started “moving just like Jell O.” A massive force hit the trailer, tearing the doors from their hinges and generally wrecking shit. Furniture went into Poltergeist mode, flying around and smacking into Suter.

Mobile homes are not particularly known for their stability.

At this point, it was clear that the storm was a twister. This became even clearer when Suter, wearing only his underpants, was sucked out of the trailer through a collapsing wall into the raging darkness beyond. As death scenes go, this was both extremely cinematic and utterly unsurvivable.

Except that he totally survived. By the time Suter regained consciousness, he was lying four football fields away from the remains of the trailer. The twister had been hurling him around until he ended up in a grass field almost a quarter mile away and across a barbed wire fence. He survived the 150 mph ride with just minor cuts and bruises.

He used this diagram in traffic court to contest his speeding ticket.

The astonished agents of the National Weather Service measured the precise distance of his flight at 1,307 feet, which is the longest tornado aided flight a human being has ever survived, especially with such minor injuries. Really, the only reason we’re not thinking Suter is secretly Superman is the fact that in 1955, a 9 year old girl also miraculously survived a 1,000 foot tornado ride. That she took with her pony.

So while most of us were busy building booger constructs and pissing ourselves at the thought of rides at Six Flags, Ollestad was deep sea fishing and going on jungle safaris to find secret surfing spots.

Ollestad didn’t always enjoy daddy’s lessons, but they did make him tough. He became a master at everything extreme, from comfortably riding on his father’s back while he was surfing at age 1 to effortlessly skiing impossibly difficult slopes at freaking 4.

If he tired of being a badass, a modeling career awaited him.

On February 19, 1979, Ollestad 11 at the time and his father were flying to Big Bear Mountain to retrieve a trophy he had won the day before. Their Cessna was caught in a blizzard and crashed in the mountains at around 8,600 feet. Ollestad’s dad and the pilot were killed instantly. Ollestad was more or less OK, because of course he was, but the other survivor (his father’s girlfriend, Sandra) had a dislocated shoulder and a busted head. This less than ideal situation was soon made a whole lot worse, because the rescue helicopters completely missed them. They were on their own.

Because the trip had been just their family’s version of a quick afternoon errand, Ollestad didn’t even have a pair of gloves. All he had was an impossibly steep mountainside, his father’s training, and a primal will to live. Carry dragging the injured Sandra with him, he started making his way down, an inch at a time. Because the universe really wanted to rub it in, Sandra soon lost her grip and fell right before Ollestad’s eyes. We assume that a cloud shaped like a middle finger drifted across the sky immediately afterward.

At that point, most grown men would just lose their shit and give up. Instead, Ollestad fucking leveled up and continued with a full health bar. He went into survival mode, ignoring all the pain and fear. Hanging on by his fingernails, Ollestad made his way down until he finally got to more solid ground. That is to say, impractical.

On July 9, 1958, a massive rock slide dropped some 30.6 million cubic meters of rock right into Alaska’s Lituya Bay. The rocks hit the water with enough force to create a wave roughly 1,720 feet high, uprooting trees and destroying almost everything and everyone in its path .except for a couple of guys who were just casually surfing on top of it.

Howard G. Ulrich and his 8 year old son, Sonny, had picked that fateful night for a nice father son boat trip. by earthquake like sounds and tremors, soon followed by a crash “like an atomic explosion.” They were now staring at the business end of a rapidly approaching megatsunami. Ulrich, being a ’50s kind of guy, eyed the all consuming wall of water, threw his kid a life preserver, and said, “Son, start praying.” Then he presumably poured himself a final glass of whiskey and looked around for a secretary to bang.

But never mind, the lonely poet was right: our pens can help to bring out what’s best in us.

It’s easy to forget this. We see so many pens: countless chewed, inky, snapped biros. In 2005, Bic apparently sold it’s one hundred billionth pen. With these figures, it’s easy to take them for granted, leave them between car seats, or use them as pea shooters. (Am I giving away too much about my teenage years?)

But over time, pens have symbolized great power: from ‘the hand that signed the paper’, to the old adage about pens and swords.

Indeed, in recent years the humble fountain pen has enjoyed something of a resurgence. While it’s still an emblem of professional status for lawyers and doctors, many others are picking up the fluted nib, and putting it to paper.

But why? In a time of cheap ballpoints, tiny laptops and Word enabled mobile phones, what on earth can be gained from a fountain pen? Isn’t this just expensive, shallow, Luddite stubbornness?

Perhaps for some, it’s a misplaced longing for the past, or a sign of pomposity.

But for most, it’s simply a useful, beautiful, evocative tool. Most Australians write something every day, and our tools make no small difference. Of course a pen can’t make us nicer, smarter, or more beautiful. But they can enrich and revive the art of writing.

Take my new pen, a simple European model. First, it is simply a pleasure to use: balance, texture, colour, line these all add to the experience of writing. And as I write a lot, this is important. It makes the job a joy (when sometimes it’s a bore or a burden).

Second, it is adaptable: different inks and nibs mean the pen can be changed to suit my hand. And over time, the nib gradually adjusts to my writing. If only slightly,
Montblanc Boheme Rouge Diamond Black Rollerball Pen ABC News Australian Broadcasting Corporation
it’s a step away from the impersonal sameness of the keyboard.

Third, by encouraging longhand, it offers meditation, focus, personality. I wrote much of Distraction by hand, and the passages written in longhand have a certain meditative patience. Perhaps writing by hand the slow, careful craft is more conducive to speculation. Because I’m restricted to the pages in front of me, this meditation can often be focused I’m alone with my phrases. And I’m also confronted by the personality of my own writing this can prompt introspection or reverie (and embarrassment).

Forth, fountains are actually incredibly efficient. Used and maintained well, they can last a lifetime. And, despite the higher cost, they’re economical: all you have to buy is ink, and even a cheap bottle can last a year.

Lastly, the fountain pen has a certain historical charm. Hannah Arendt’s broken pen, Roland Barthes’ pen collector’s addiction, Joseph Conrad’s request for a “fountain pen of good repute” as an advance the stories stick with you. ‘I bought myself a proper honest to goodness fountain pen for that book,’ he says,’to fake myself into that mindset.’ This from a man with a ‘house full of Macs’. This is certainly how I feel: it’s a small way for the literary tradition to continue, in me.

Obviously, good literature can be written with a laptop, dip pen, or Biro talent and perseverance will out. It can be chiseled in stone or daubed in paint.

I also have to be very careful that interest doesn’t become obsession. I’ve heard of pen lovers spending thousands of dollars on Watermans, Viscontis or bespoke Conway Stewarts. One collector recently gave away some of his beauties, hoping to ‘rectify. wayward character defects,’ as he humbly put it. As far as addictions go, stylophilia is a benign one but still an addiction.

Also, not everyone will enjoy the eccentricity of the nib, or the interruptions of refilling. Many are too frustrated by the speed they need typing or texting. I sympathise: sometimes deadlines demand the efficiency of the computer.

But where so much is instantaneity and overload, fountain pens are a chance for patient, attentive craft. They offer an aesthetically rich, personal, historical antidote to yet another clogged ballpoint, or distraction of my laptop.

MILLINOCKET, Maine Ultramarathon runner Scott Jurek, who on July 12 , will go to trial if he can’t resolve three pending citations issued July 12 by rangers at Baxter State Park, his attorney said Monday.

Jurek is accused of bringing alcohol, littering and bringing an oversized group to the summit, all violations of park rules. Each offense, considered civil violations under Maine law, carries a fine of up to $1,000.

The attorney declined to say what would be a satisfactory resolution to the case for his client. Plea agreements often include the dropping of some charges or violations if a defendant agrees to plead guilty or admit to others.

Efforts on Monday to reach Penobscot County District Attorney R. Christopher Almy, who is prosecuting the case, were unsuccessful.

“The park is a sacred place, and [Jurek] was disrespectful,” Almy told the New York Times last week.

If a settlement is not reached on Sept. 9, a decision will be made whether to seek a jury or a jury waived trial, McKee said. A trial most likely would be held next year at the Penobscot Judicial Center in Bangor.

On Monday, Jurek was in ,

according to information posted on his Facebook page.

Park officials chastised Jurek and his sponsors in a statement posted on its Facebook page. In it, Jurek’s celebration at the peak, which included a bottle of champagne and was filmed for commercial use,

McKee said that park officials are making an example of Jurek because of his celebrity at a time when the rise in the number of through hikers on the federally maintained Appalachian Trail is causing tension in Baxter State Park. The last 15 miles of the 2,180 mile trail, which ends at the top of Mount Katahdin, is in the state owned park.

“These are not Scott’s issues,” McKee said.

The attorney said that a great deal of misinformation about what happened as Jurek neared the peak and once he reached it has been circulated through social media.

“There was no raucous party at the top of the mountain, and there was no corporate event,” McKee said. “Scott signed in with 12 people [the maximum number allowed without a permit]. People came and joined Scott’s group on their own.”

McKee said that Jurek did open the bottle of champagne and drank from it.

Jurek told his version of what happened when he reached the base of Mount Katahdin in a late July posting on his blog. “I stopped to pose for pictures with several large groups of people, including a trail work crew, to thank them for their support and invaluable efforts. There have been reports of a ballooning group size, but my group always remained at twelve.

“One friend decided to surprise me with a bottle of champagne,” he continued. “He asked the two park rangers at the trailhead if that was okay and was advised to keep it away from families and children. To him, that sounded like alcohol was acceptable within reason. When I reached the summit, two different park rangers watched my friend hand me the bottle to celebrate. We were not aware of any rules against alcohol and I own that I should have been better informed. Neither of the rangers said a word about it. If they had, I would have immediately put the bottle away.”

The Gillette Company, which in addition to shaving products makes Paper Mate, Flair and Waterman pens, agreed today to pay $:285 million ($561 million) for Parker Pen Holdings Ltd. of Britain. The deal will make Gillette, which is the world’s largest shaving supplies company, the world’s largest pen maker, with a 15 percent share of the $5 billion world market. Bic holds about 8 percent; other rivals are Cross, Mont Blanc and Pentel.

Parker, which had been up for sale since last year, was attractive because it had consistent 20 percent operating profits over the last four years, said Alfred M. Zeien, Gillette’s chairman. The company’s sales grew 7 percent to 9 percent annually over the last few years and profits are rising “well in excess of that,” he said. Joel Davis, vice president of Gillette’s stationery division, said Gillette and Parker “complement each other with different geographic strengths, price point positioning and distribution channels.” Gillette’s shares fell 37.5 cents yesterday, to $57. Parker, founded in the United States in 1888, was acquired by investors led by Schroder Ventures in 1986. Parker had sales of $:181 million and profits of $:35.9 million before taxes and interest for the year ended Feb. 28.
