Laxman have commented in a cartoon on the excitement over Narendra Modi’s exclusive, pin striped suit on the eve of Republic Day that drew more attention than the nearly 4,000 word joint statement on the visit? He could have drawn Modi clad in the same fabric saying something like, stop wasting time looking for any fine print. Read my lips instead because, as my American buddies would say, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. The idea was not to pun on the old BJP controversy where Govindacharya had dismissed Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a mere mask (“mukhauta”) thinly concealing the reality of the BJP. It was, instead, to make the point that unlike Vajpayee, Modi represented the true face of the BJP/RSS and did not pretend to be something else. With Modi, we had said, the man you see is the man you get. Pinstripes woven into the fabric in his own name may sound like an excess, even exaggerated vanity or narcissism. But it is silly to be surprised. He has already set a pattern changing more outfits in a day, particularly on a special occasion or at a summit meeting, than stars in a Tamil film song. He has flaunted a customised choice of colours, even so bright as to be unknown in our understated political tradition, to suit the occasion. Remember his neon red waist coat in Bangalore to celebrate the successful Mangalyaan launch with ISRO scientists. On the Japan visit, the whisper on the sidelines was that he changed more outfits in one day than our ambassador there changed saris in the entire trip. But then the ambassador is merely a staid civil servant and should remain so.

Modi sees himself as a mass leader, a brand made for media, from TV to Twitter, from selfies to Facebook. He sees no issue wrapping it in livery that, in his view, enhances the brand. Could it just be that in his view the pin stripes only underline Brand Modi? Or may be, as we say elsewhere in this issue (Writings on the Wall) there is a Pucca Punjabi inside this Gujju body? I got it, I flaunt it, and if you have a problem, go see a shrink, stop psychoanalysing me.

That, in short, is also my objection to the chatter on Modi’s allegedly crude, vain, narcissistic style. We know our politicians are never poor, but we want them to look like becharas. And however cynical and selfish they may be in their politics, however much they may put away in mythical Swiss accounts or, more likely, in IOU hundis with real estate buddies, we prefer to see them dressed in crumpled khadi, if not sack cloth and ashes. My point, therefore, is not an endorsement of Modi’s style, but that we are silly in being judgemental about it, indulging in drawing room/cocktail circuit pop psychology. Not when so many of us in the same, selfstyled (pun intended) upper crust go around dressed in stupid pastel trousers, little black dresses that stretch to the precarious limit going down our bell bottoms and thunder thighs, and those awful, awful Louis Vuitton bags and accessories. So bad and so expensive that the more apt way to spell and pronounce Vuitton should be an unprintable Indianism starting with C which you need film maker Vishal Bhardwaj’s cheek to unleash.

The most important thing about Modi is that the man you see is the man you get. Intellectually, politically, ideologically and philosophically, he is in an argument with Jawaharlal Nehru.

Let’s take that argument forward. Each one of us, let’s list our top five political personalities for poor taste in dressing and lifestyle. I suspect there will be quite a bit of unanimity there. Mayawati with her pearls and purses, Ambedkar with his often poorly fitted suits, Balasaheb with his white wine and now Modi with his neon waistcoats and custom woven pin stripes. Then list those with good style: Vadundhara Raje with her silks and jewellery, late Jyoti Basu with his love for the revolution and single malts, Arun Jaitley with his cashmeres and Patek Philippe watches, late Rajiv Gandhi with his Gucci shoes, Mont Blanc pens and exotic holidays, Kamal Nath with a jar of Harrods cookies while clad in pure khadi on Chhindwara’s campaign trail, even Anna Hazare recuperating at one of our most expensive corporate fat farms in Bangalore as if fasting was not good enough to detox and lose weight for a Gandhian, and Lohiaite George Fernandes whose Lamy pens were seen as a style statement. There is a twin hypocrisy here. The moment somebody rises in politics, we want them to be in modest political garb, never mind the Lanvin undies inside or Harrods cookies in the car. And second, we draw judgement based on where somebody came from. A Nehru or Gandhi, born in riches, dump their old style and luxuries, adopt khadi and become icons of humility. But what about someone with utterly humble beginnings, who has now tasted success and thinks he can afford to live it up a bit? That outrages us, yeh kahan se aa gaya (where did he come from)? It is tempting to invoke actor Dilip Kumar’s comic portrayal of a “westernised” rustic in the old film Sagina where he dances to “Sala main to saab ban gaya. yeh suit mera dekho, yeh boot mera dekho, jaise chhora koyi London ka”. We tend to respond the same snooty way looking at anybody pretending to live beyond his “original” station. Again, to hark back to that Dilip Kumar song, we are happy if langoti walas stay that way and happier if suit walas dump them for langotis.

This is not a changing but a changed India. Gandhi, Nehru, Patel were all born with riches sufficient to take them overseas for studies a hundred years ago. They sought their political style statement in discarding what they had inherited. The current Lok Sabha, Modi included, is filled with leaders of a completely different upbringing. They bring nothing by way of their entitlement and now, having tasted success, have less hesitation flaunting it. Maybe their progeny will still impress us by giving up the apparent riches.

I am the least qualified person to comment on somebody’s sartorial preferences. But what I admire about Modi is his lack of hypocrisy. I can illustrate what I mean. Look at the young, supposedly new generation hot shots of the Congress. Many of them maintain two lifestyles, one until 10 pm in khadi kurtas and the second after 10 pm in tight black silk tees, sometimes even on sexy Ducatis and Harley Davidsons. I recall going to see George Fernandes once and seeing him artfully crumple his ironed pajamas. How could the humble, socialist trade unionist be seen wearing anything orderly? Of course, he had no issues with an IAS aide kneeling down on the floor of an Mi 17 helicopter to slip the snow shoes onto his feet and do the laces as we approached Siachen for a recording.

Chances are we will not see such hypocrisy from Modi, whatever our view on his style or taste. In any case, we did not elect him for his humility. We loved his 56 inch chest swagger, selfprojection of his Gujarat success, his exaggerated delivery. As I said earlier, the most important thing about Modi is that the man you see is the man you get. Intellectually, politically, ideologically and philosophically, he is in an argument with Jawaharlal Nehru. Now, check out this test. Go to an outlet in your city of Fabindia or Khadi Bhavan where our liberal community had gone for decades to buy our handloom kurtas and “Jawahar” jackets. Hang around long enough and you will overhear some customer asking for a “Modi” jacket. It is the same jacket. At least sartorially, Modi is winning his argument with Nehru.

mont blanc pens for sale A Brief History of the Mayans

second hand mont blanc pens A Brief History of the Mayans

The Mayans (or Maya) lived in the areas now known as southern Mexico and Guatemala. Although it is commonly thought that the Mayans no longer exist, lots of Mayan people still populate these regions and speak Mayan languages. The peak of the Mayan civilization was between c. 250BC AD900, but they were in existence from as long ago as 2000BC.

The Mayans were very good at farming. Over the course of several centuries they drained wetlands and developed effective systems of irrigation. Consequently, they could support a sizable population. Between 300BC AD300 many Mayan cities were built. The cities were uniquely ornate and contained temple pyramids, marketplaces, workshops and a fortified palace, as well as living accommodation.

The class system of the Mayans meant that nobles, rulers, priests, officials (and their servants) resided in the cities. Ordinary Mayans, on the other hand, worked on the land. They visited cities for religious festivals and the markets.

As well as being successful farmers, the Mayans were also very advanced in their studies of mathematics, astronomy and systems of calendars. Their alphabet consisted of 800 hieroglyphs. Their hieroglyphs included both ideograms and phonetic symbols. Mayan hieroglyphs can be seen on their ancient monuments. They also made books from bark paper. As far as is known, the Mayan written language was the only fully developed one in the pre Columbian Americas.

The Mayan cities were independent of each other (city states) and they often feuded. They took prisoners and exacted tribute (payment as a from of respect) from other Mayan city states.

A volcanic eruption in the south around AD230 blew Mount Ilopango apart. The southern Mayan cities were abandoned because of the ash fall out from this eruption. This brought the ‘pre classic’ Mayan period to an end.

The classic period (the peak) of Mayan civilization was between c. AD250 AD900. Lots of new Mayan cities were constructed in Yucatan, the main one of which was Tikal. This period also saw much artistic and intellectual development, especially in the Mayans that populated the southern lowlands.

The Mayans were skilled craftspeople. They made sculptures from stone, decorated pottery, paintings, jade carvings, tools and objects from copper and gold. The Mayans also encouraged trade by building roads and shipping lanes.

The Mayan mathematical system was based on units of 20. It used three symbols. A bar symbol stood for ‘5’, a dot stood for ‘1’ and a shell stood for ‘0’. The Mayans (or possibly their predecessors, the Olmecs) used the concept of 0, or zero, centuries before other civilizations. Mayan inscriptions also depict them working with sums that involve numbers up to hundreds of millions.

The Mayans produced remarkably accurate astronomical observations and the accuracy of their solar year calculation was better than that of the Gregorian Calendar.

Most Mayan cities were large, planned in grids and built around ceremonial centers. They had many shrines and temples. They were often constructed with an orientation connected with astronomical events (like the rising and setting of the sun). The religious aspects of Mayan cities and the building of pyramids shows a resemblance to ancient Egyptian culture (which was 2000 years earlier).

The Mayans practiced human blood sacrifice. They killed people to satisfy gods and ancestors. The practice was thought to bring prosperity and fertility. Later on, over ambitious building projects required more food and labor from the peasants. Wars waged to take hostages for human sacrifice cut the population by too much. This saw the collapse of the agricultural system and therefore, the cities.

Most central Mayan cities were mere ruins by AD950, although a later phase of development was to follow.

The northern lowland Mayan cities, however, flourished for several more centuries. Mayan states in the southern highlands also thrived after the end of the classic period.

The Spanish conquest of Mayan lands started in the 1520s. Some of the Mayan city states resisted fiercely.

There is much modern interest in what is known as the Mayan Prophecies. Archeological investigations of Mayan architecture is thought by some to provide evidence predicting an upcoming cataclismic event, or the end of the world. Some people think this predicted event will occur late on in 2012.

HALIFAX A fresh generation of children books is finding the grace notes in Halifax worst moment a massive explosion that levelled much of the city 100 years ago but inspired acts of kindness that still resonate.

The books vary on how closely they approach the widespread injury and nearly 2,000 deaths that resulted from the massive Halifax Explosion of Dec. 6, 1917, when a French munitions ship collided with a Belgian relief vessel in the city wartime harbour.

Still, as hurricanes and earthquakes batter communities around the globe, the retelling of Halifax time of trial tend to come together in their desire to find hope amidst the floods and rubble.

Other books deal with the experiences of a Halifax newsboy, and of an orphaned girl who loses her family.

The Christmas tree given each year as a gift by Halifax to its southern neighbour is a key theme for Simons as well as for illustrator Belle DeMont and her father John DeMont in their book The Little Tree by the Sea: From Halifax to Boston with love (Nimbus).

The main character in The Little Tree by the Sea is an imaginary tree that grows on the slope of Citadel Hill overlooking the city, calling out in alarm as the Mont Blanc collides with the Imo.

Belle DeMont fiery depiction of the blast doesn shy away from the terror of the event, though the story shows just a few examples of injured citizens.

Canary yellow streets and pea green city buildings prior to the event move into more sombre indigos and deep purple skies and seas afterwards, as the tree cry for help drifts across the water to Boston.

The little tree eventually grows tall in the by the sea and offers itself as recollection of love.

finding the sweet that counters the bitter always, in any situation. My favourite kids books are ones that goes down and up just like life does. You find solutions. You find silver linings, Belle said in an interview.

Simons book only references the explosion indirectly, though it is focused on coping with adversity. The artist and teacher has created flying squirrels whose enormous eastern spruce becomes the annual gift from Halifax to its southern neighbour, forcing them to seek a new home. No one forgets a kindness like that. says she was inspired by how the Bostonians responded with its supplies, people and its knowledge of how to rebuild.

The artist said in her research she also ran across the work of the Massachusetts Halifax Health Commission, formed as a direct outcome of the explosion, which produced health reforms that saved lives for generations to come.

More detailed accounts of response are found in Allison Lawlor non fiction book Broken Pieces: An Orphan of the Halifax Explosion (Nimbus), aimed at seven to 10 year old readers.

Lawlor tells the story of 14 year old Barbara Orr, who was walking to a friend house when the explosion occurred. Readers learn about rescue efforts and historical events such as the bravery of Vincent Coleman, the railway dispatcher who stayed at his station to send out a warning. You will always find people who are helping.’ Halsey, whose book Explosion Newsie (Formac) was published in 2015, will join John and Belle DeMont and Simons to discuss how children relate to the city most notable moment at a book festival in the city this weekend.

Her book told the story of nine year old Macky as he delivers newspapers both before and after the explosion. His efforts help people discover their injured loved ones.

The former librarian says children continue to need stories of disaster and of redemption, for this is what life is like.

mother grew up in the Blitz, night after night being bombed and my daughter was in Fort McMurray (Alberta) and her house was burned in a blink of an eye, she said in a telephone interview.

Having done one session and looking at actual revenues, I decided to change the way we offer classes, including the fees we charged. I can recreate the wheel. I do one session, and then review how it works. The interesting thing about that? After the session was over, I didn really do a step back, big picture review of how the session worked. I had some ideas for new classes and packaging up the old ones, but I didn really do the business owner thing and look at the business. (Bad Dawn.)It took my being in a business retreat last week and presenting my ideas for the packages of classes I was going to offer, and one of my masterminders going, much are you charging for classes? That ridiculously too low. Do you really want to be seen as Wal Mart? though my first reaction was a so do not want to rethink all this, that statement hit me hard. No, of course I don want to be seen as Wal Mart. I do believe in get what you pay for and the perceived value of things. If these are such great classes, why are they dirt cheap? My time, and my instructors time is certainly valuable, and the classes are packed with information. This is high quality, silk shirt type of material. And while, in general, I very pleased with how the spring/summer session went, I never satisfied with good enough. I a maximizer, and I always want to make it ( being anything) the best it can be. Are we going to be Nordstrom? Maybe. At the very least, I like to be Chico (with their really awesome collection of accessories). I written before about how writing and publishing a book should be seen as a business. Well, what kind of business? Do YOU want to be the Wal Mart in your field? Would you rather be a Nordstrom? Or something in between, like a Chico (Remember the great accessories!)Of course,

books sell at a specific price range. You not really going to sell your hardcover for $200. However, there are some places where a Wal Mart vs. If you self publish, you do not want someone to pick up your book and immediately know it been self published. That means spend the money on an editor, proofreader, book designer You don want your book to stand out as low quality among traditionally published books. I can pretty quickly (without even looking at the title page) tell whether a book been (badly) self published, from quality of printing, formatting, and editing. There nothing wrong with self publishing. You just have to determine if you want your book to look like the high quality books (in look and format) the traditional publishing houses put out. Again, I can tell if it a do it yourself website, or one that looks professional. If the only face you have to show to the world is your website, make it look like you a professional. Don let your sixteen year old nephew do the design. Look big and play big. Rethink that picture of you at the party with a martini glass in your hand (unless it part of your persona). Have high quality, professional pictures taken. Think about what you wearing, the background, what you holding. The picture file (more than likely a digital file in this day and age) needs to be high quality as well. The last thing you want is a grainy picture on the back of your book. If you don have a writing coach or writing group, get one. The last thing you want is to diminish the credibility you worked so hard to build by shoddy writing. This can include all sorts of things like query letters and book proposals. While the public doesn see your initial (or 500th) query letter or proposal, someone will. Whether an agent or a publishing house, come across as a professional, and not a be doing yourself a severe injustice if you don publish my book attitude. So take some time and think about it. Who are you in your world? If you writing a book, you want to be seen as an expert. Are you a Wal Mart expert or a Nordstrom expert? How does that affect your book? What do you need to put in place? Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne on Thursday expressed “disgust” over an alleged multimillion dollar conspiracy involving the company’s former labor relations chief, Alphons Iacobelli, and the late General Holiefield, who was UAW’s former top FCA negotiator for eight years.

In a letter to employees obtained by Automotive News, Marchionne distanced the company from the scheme detailed in a Wednesday indictment of Iacobelli and Holiefield’s widow, Monica Morgan. He also said FCA may file a lawsuit against Iacobelli and others.

“I join Dennis Williams, the UAW President, in expressing my disgust at the conduct alleged in the indictment which constitutes the most egregious breach of trust by the individuals involved,” Marchionne wrote. “I also join Dennis in confirming that this conduct had nothing whatsoever to do with the collective bargaining process, but rather involved two bad actors who apparently saw an opportunity to misappropriate funds entrusted to their control and who, unfortunately, co opted other individuals to carry out or conceal their activities over a period of several years.”

Marchionne, who did not address the topic during his Thursday morning conference call with analysts and reporters discussing second quarter earnings, said FCA is considering legal action.

“Now that the matter has become public and FCA US’s actions cannot jeopardize a government investigation, the company intends to pursue all potential legal remedies against Al Iacobelli and any other culpable parties,” he said.

Iacobelli, 57, and Morgan, 54, were charged Wednesday with criminal violations of the National Labor Relations Act. Separately,

federal officials announced fraud charges against a former FCA financial analyst, Jerome Durden, who is accused of creating false tax returns to hide the payments to Holiefield, Iacobelli and other beneficiaries who were not identified.

The payments were made, according to the grand jury, using funds from FCA that were transferred to the Chrysler UAW training center to provide education, training and retraining of workers. The indictment says Iacobelli gave Holiefield and “other senior UAW officials” virtually unlimited and unscreened use of credit cards to keep them “fat, dumb and happy.”

Iacobelli also was charged with tax violations related to diverting more than $1 million in funds from the training center for his own benefit, including: a Ferrari 458 Spider costing more than $350,000; a lease on a private jet; two limited edition Mont Blanc pens costing $37,500 each; a pool and hundreds of thousands of dollars in improvements to his residence; and hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal credit card expenses, among other purchases.

“I encourage you not to be discouraged by the actions of a few people that betrayed our core principles and our standards of morality, integrity and quality,” Marchionne said. “We dealt swiftly with these individuals as we will anyone who does not abide by our code of conduct and who disregard the ethical principles that lie at the foundation of FCA.”

Iacobelli abruptly left FCA in June 2015, shortly before the next round of contract talks with the UAW was scheduled to begin. FCA said at the time that the executive had simply decided to retire but on Wednesday clarified it had fired Iacobelli after learning of “possible malfeasance.”

After leaving FCA, Iacobelli took a high level labor relations position with General Motors,

tour mt blanc A Case of Borderline Personality Disorder in ‘Girl

mont blanc pens limited edition A Case of Borderline Personality Disorder in ‘Girl

The movie “Girl, Interrupted” takes place in the late 60’s, starring Wynonna Ryder playing the role of Susanna. As a young girl just out of high school, Susanna gets put into a mental institution with the help of a psychologist that is a friend of her parents. After being in the hospital ward for a couple of months, she finally starts talking to her psychiatrist and gets a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

Borderline Personality Disorder is one of the most frequently treated personality disorders for in patients. This disorder is characterized by a constant recurrent cycle of being unstable. This instability is seen in mood, self image, and interpersonal relationships. These symptoms normally begin in early adulthood and the disorder is more common in females. People that suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder are very impulsive and this is shown in many different contexts. In order for a person to be diagnosed with this disorder, he or she must display at least five of the following symptoms, according to the DSM IV TR criteria in Table 9 4 of Oltmanns Abnormal Psychology textbook,

6.) Affective instability due to a marked reactivity to mood (such as intense episodic dysphoria, irritability, or anxiety usually lasting a few hours and only rarely more than a few days).

7.) Chronic feelings of emptiness.

8.) Inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger ( displays of temper, constant anger, recurrent physical fights).

9.) Transient, stress related paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms.

Many people with Borderline Personality Disorder also have a fear of being alone. Some possible causes of this are based on things that happened in the person’s childhood, such as bad parenting, being neglected, low amounts of supervision, witnessing or being a victim of domestic violence and abuse, and any other type of traumatic event that occurred during childhood.

Susanna’s diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder is based off of a few different symptoms that she displays in the movie. To being with, Susanna never had any friends before she was placed in the mental institution,

with the exception of a few men, majority of which she has slept with a time or two. Her unstable interpersonal relationships continued after being placed in the institution when she becomes friends with Angelina Jolie’s character, Lisa.

Just like DMS IV TR criteria number two states, Susanna goes from thinking that Lisa is the perfect friend to hating everything about her. Also, Susanna is very impulsive, as criteria number four states. She had sex with her professor in high school and then had sex with two people in the same day while in the mental institution, one of them being an orderly. Her impulsivity goes on to drinking, which is one of the reasons that she was put into the hospital in the first place. The main occurrence that got Susanna placed into a mental institution is that she took a bottle of aspirin chased with a bottle of vodka just because she had a headache. She also banged her wrist up, making it completely bruised because she said that she had no bones in it. That occurrence qualifies for DSM criteria number five as a suicidal gesture and self mutilating behavior because she says that she does not want to die. Susanna has a hard time being who she is, mainly because she does not really know who she is. This, being DSM criteria number three, is Susanna’s form of identity disturbance. Backing up this criteria are examples of her not being able to fit in while in high school, kissing Lisa because she is not sure how she is supposed to like her, and trying to stand up for herself but quickly backing down because of her lack of self esteem. Susanna also has problems with her moods and emotions. She will suddenly change her mood and then it will become intensified. Being DSM criteria number six, Susanna is sometimes extremely depressed, such as when Lisa leaves and Susanna will not get out of bed at all. Also, she gets angry very quickly and thinks that everyone is attacking her, especially when she starts yelling at Valerie when she forces her to get out of bed. The diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder is supported by all of these symptoms, with Susanna qualifying for five of the DSM IV TR criteria.

The movie “Girl, Interrupted” has some inaccuracies of how it portrays Borderline Personality Disorder though. For instance, Susanna says that it is hard for her to stay in one place. She has beliefs of time moving backwards and feels that life has a mystical undertow, along with quicksand and shadows. She also has problems differentiating dreams from reality. Susanna says that the reason she took a bottle of aspirin and vodka is “to make the shit stop.” This suggests that she could be slightly delusional and schizophrenic,

instead of just Borderline.
